The Kids Heart Challenge (formerly Jump Rope for Heart) is in full swing!

Remember, more than 50% of kids are not getting the physical activity they need to be healthy. You’re helping to change that. We have a special incentive at our school. If we can get 50% of our students registered and taking the healthy challenges, we will receive an additional $500 to purchase new PE equipment.

Help us reach our goal! Get your student registered for Kids Heart Challenge today!

News of the Week—Jan 25-29

POPCORN WORDS:  with     big

WRITING: This week the kinders were encouraged to write their own HOW TO… stories.  It was exciting to see what they chose to teach others through  their writing on how to do something.  They did an amazing job stretching out unknown words, using sight words, including finger spaces and sentence stoppers!  They are  becoming awesome writers!

MATH: We spent the week looking at teen numbers (finding ten and extra ones), telling math stories, identifying shapes, adding and subtracting numbers from 0-5, writing numbers 0-30, and showing partners for numbers 2 through 7.  Next week, we will be reviewing math concepts we learned in this math unit before taking our Unit #3 test.

READING: The kinders learned how important it is to check our reading!  We learned that if we see tricky words in our book and we are not sure how to read them we can stop and ask:

  1. Does it make sense?
  2. Does it sound right?
  3. Does it look right?

Also that when reading challenging books you need to use picture power that has “extra strength“.  That means you really need to spend time looking at the pictures, noticing more and more details while making sure the words match the pictures. The whole picture may give us clues about words we are unsure of and it also tells us quite a bit when it comes to retelling the book!  The kinders are developing this skill as their reading level grows. We learned that readers can move from reading a pattern book to reading a storybook.  We practiced this by starting to read Wake Up Dad!

LITERACY/PHONICS:  We worked on our sight words, added another book to our blue book box with our popcorn words (with, big) in it, listened for syllables in words,  sounded out 3 letter words (CVC – consonant, vowel, consonant words) and listened for medial sounds in words.  We also learned that punctuation marks matter when reading sentences.

KOOL KINDERS SPREADING KINDNESS AND A BEING BOOK LOVER:  It is time to be the Kool Kinder again!  Your kinder will be doing two activities.  They will spread kindness by picking a kind act to do at home and drawing a picture, plus they will  choose a favorite storybook so that we can read it at school.

Kids Heart Challenge

Information about Kids Heart Challenge will be coming home with kinders this week.  Please note that this fundraiser is for the American Heart Association, it does also helps us get P.E. Equipment for Georgetown Elementary.  The Kids Heart Challenge Fundraiser is done ONLINE (see link below) and will be open from February 6 until February 28.

When your kinder joins Kids Heart Challenge (formerly Jump Rope for Heart) they will hear from kids with special hearts and raise funds to help those born with heart defects.  Kinders learn about taking care of their own heart through fun challenges and activities for physical, social and emotional health.

Get online and register your kinder today:

Please note that thank-you prizes earned by kinders will be handed out when they come to P.E. class.  Some prizes need to be ordered when the fundraiser is over and will be delivered sometime in March.  Any money donated after Feb. 28 will not earn prizes.
