News of the Week—April 26-30


WRITING:  We read books and watched some videos about COWS before we wrote facts onto our “have, can, are” charts. The kinders decided which facts they wanted to include in their own All About Cows books.  They worked independently to put their facts into sentences, remembering to use capital letters, spaces between words and sentence stoppers, before drawing detailed pictures.  This was their “on-demand/test” of our All About ___ writing genre. This informational book will be graded and used for our final report card grade on informational writing. The kinders did a fabulous job!  I can’t wait to share how well they did with you.  

We made a cute cow craft on Friday.  It was ‘moo’arvlous fun! 🙂

READING: We began a new unit called Character Round-Up.  In this unit, we will dive deeper into learning about characters. We started by learning that a character can be an animal, person or thing, characters can talk and characters can change, plus more. Then we took time to look closely at what characters look like. We learned more about characters by studying what they say or do and asking ourselves “Are they nice? Are they mean?”.  We can also learn about characters through what other characters do and comparing them to the main character.

MATH:  We worked on finding partners of number 7 by using 2 colors of unifix cubes.  What fun!  We also worked in our math books making groups of objects equal by drawing more objects, comparing objects that are Greater than or Less than, solving addition and subtraction problems and found totals of number partners. We had fun playing FLOWER POWER to practice writing addition and subtraction equations.

LITERACY/PHONICS: We learned that every word has at least one vowel.  Mabel told us we can use a new super power…VOWEL POWER when we look at words.  She gave each of us our own vowel shields to help us accomplish this. We searched through big books to find as many vowels as we could. We also worked on…

  • reading a short story and answering comprehension questions
  • making words in the -IT family
  • listening for and writing vowels
  • sentence dictation – writing all the sounds we hear in the words

KOOL KINDER AND THE SURPRISE BAG AND THE GUESSING BAG:  The items this week were legos, popcorn, chocolate chips and mint candies



  • Bring 2 snacks each day to school and a water bottle with a spill proof lid please. 
  • Return take home books and library books on Wednesday
  • Watch the weather. Please keep in mind that even though the season is spring, some days will be cold, wet and rainy.  Please continue to send a coat, with your kinder. Boots are not needed unless it rains. Thanks! :)

NEWS OF THE WEEK—March 25-28


Well, we made it!  It is officially SPRING BREAK!  The kinders have been anxiously counting down the days.  Take a peek at what happened this week in kindergarten.



MATH:  We spent the first few days reviewing various math concepts such as solving addition & subtraction problems, drawing & writing partner equations for story problems, identifying 3D shapes, writing number partner equations, drawing tens & extra ones for teen numbers.  On Wednesday, the kinders worked inside their “office spaces” to take the Unit #4 test.  These tests will come home after spring break.  

WRITING:  We read a collection of non-fictional books about pigs and located many interesting facts to write on our chart paper.  We used this information to help us write our information writings All About Pigs.  The writings by the children have been SO impressive! They are beginning to use spaces between words, popcorn words and sentence stoppers with more regularity.  Hooray for them!



ONCE UPON A TIME—-THE THREE LITTLE PIGS:  We also read the classic story The Three LIttle Pigs as well as some books with a twist The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, The Three Horrid Pigs and the Big Friendly Wolf and The Three Little Pigs and the somewhat bad pig.  Of course we needed to practice our retelling skills by creating props (character puppets and the straw, stick and brick houses out of a milk carton!) so that your kinder can tell you the story at home. We sang this fun song (using my CD) frequently this week. I found it on YouTube so that you can enjoy it at home. Here is the link to The 3 Little Pigs Blues by Greg and Steve.They also practiced reading popcorn words by playing RUN, PIGGY, RUN. Look for this game inside your kinder’s folder.

READING:  We continued to learn what avid readers like to do.  Avid readers don’t only like to share books, they also like to do fun things with books and their friends.  The kinders were introduced to READING PLAYDATES.  Playdate activities include PLAYING SCHOOL (Reading aloud & Shared reading); PLAYING GAMES (Snap word hunt & Guess what’s next?); PLAYING PRETEND (Act it out! & Use gestures!)   It was fun to see the kinders explore books, deciding what they wanted to do on a Reading playdate.  I LOVED seeing all the different choices!  Many LOVED playing school and being a teacher or student to explore books.  It was also fun to see those who made games out of finding sight words in books.  Those who chose to act out books were so fun to watch!  Getting these kinders excited about reading has been so much fun!!  We have LOTS of Avid Readers in our classroom! A fabulous way to learn!

MARCH IS READING MONTH:  We read Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons (again)! It’s one of our favorites! Then we enjoyed a yummy and cute snack that matched Pete’s shirt from the story! 

Mrs. Kuieck’s 2nd graders came and we enjoyed reading books together.  It has been so fun having other classes come into our room this month.

It was SO exciting to wear jamies to school on Thursday.  In the morning the kinders rotated among the kindergarten rooms to hear each teacher read one of their favorite stories.  Then they had a READ IN, where they were able to read books in each classroom for a few minutes.  An awesome way to end March is Reading Month…..by READING!!!  We did some reading (Llama, Llama, Red Pajamas) and storytelling (5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed) ourselves throughout the day.


 Olivia turned 6 on Sunday, March 24.  

 Bronwyn turned 6 on Tuesday, March 26.  Thank you, girls, for the birthday treat bags!


*TAKE HOME Books:  Your kinder will not have a book to take home over Spring Break.  They will be taking home a new book to read on Monday, April 8.  Reading books with parent volunteers will resume on Tuesday, April 9.  If you have free time, continue to practice popcorn words, addition & subtraction stories with written partner equations and write various kinds of stories…narrative, informational and pattern books.

*WINTER GEAR: Please keep in mind that even though the season is spring, some days will be wet and rainy.  Please continue to send a hat and mittens with your kinder as well as shoes to be worn just for outside. Thanks! :)

*BACKPACK SNACK:  Please remember to send  TWO daily healthy snacks for your kinder, as we take a moment to refuel each day.  Thank you.

NEWS OF THE WEEK—March 18-22

Did you ever wonder how pencils are made?  Read your kinder’s newspaper this weekend.  We found out!

POPCORN WORDS:     COULD    WOULD   SHOULD (as a bonus word)    The kinders practiced identifying these words in books, in messages and in writings.

 Our shared reading this week.

WRITING:  We began our week by listing facts we knew about goats.  There were a lot of good facts.  Then we read informational books about goats to gather more facts.  The kinders incorporated these facts into their writing as they created another book of All About Goats.  The kinders are doing a fantastic job with their informational writing.  They have made incredible progress this year in their writing. I am so proud of their hard work.

READING: The kinders learned that when they think of a character’s feelings, an avid reader will try to use more precise words like “disappointed” or “excited” instead of just “sad” or “happy”.  They also learned that avid readers know which super powers they use often and which powers they don’t use easily or often. They decide which goals they will use more frequently.  We decided these goals.  1.  To point at each word when reading. 2. To try another vowel sound if the word doesn’t sound right. 3. To reread when it doesn’t make sense.  These reading goals were sent home so that the kinders could practice using them when reading at home.  We will continue to encourage using these reading goals at school too.


ONCE UPON A TIME….THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF:  Our fairy tale this week was about 3 brave goats who had courage to cross a bridge and deal with a bully, the troll. We read the original story and a few different versions of the fun fairy tale.  Again, we used the SHAPE GO map to help us retell the story, talk about the characters, setting and heart of the story. We discussed words that described the three goats and the troll.  This led into a good discussion about what we can do if we encounter a bully. We also had an awesome discussion about what makes a hero.  We thought the biggest billy goat was like a hero for saving his little brothers. Be sure to ask  your kinder about these talks. We had fun retelling the story using our props. Enjoy playing the game 3 Billy Goats Gruff at home while you practice sight words.


MATH: This week the kinders practiced solving subtraction and addition problems, writing number partner equations up to 10, drawing pictures on whiteboards to match a story problem and identifying and sorting 3D shapes.  We will be reviewing these math concepts and more next week before taking our unit #4 test on Wednesday.  

MARCH IS READING MONTH:   We loved listening to Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom and had fun making words, from alphabet pretzels, climb up the Chicka tree. We also read The Mixed-Up Alphabet while eating abc cookies.

Oh, my!  What fun it was reading books with the lights off and using our flashlights to put a spotlight on the words and pictures.  Thank you for sending in a small flashlight with your kinder!  

MYSTERY READERS:   Mrs. Houtstra’s 3rd graders stopped by on Thursday afternoon to read with us.  We are really enjoying reading books with other classes. 

Kinsman was beyond thrilled when he saw his mom (little sister & baby brother) on Friday morning.  She brought the book If I had T-Rex teeth because Kinsman LOVES dinosaurs. 

Friday afternoon Mrs. Walenta & the 5th grade buddies came to read books with us.  What a fun time! 



  Adelyne turned 6 on March 18.

Kinsman turned 6 on March 21. (So sorry…Kinsman’s picture didn’t turn out. Another picture will be taken next week….stay tuned)

*TAKE HOME Books:  We will be reading books ONLY ON MONDAY this coming week.  Your kinder will not take home a book over spring break.  This will give me time to reassess the books that they are taking home.  They will take home a new book on Monday, April 8.

Is March like a lion or a lamb?  We learned about these two different types of March weather while reading our weekly newspaper.  It will be fun to see what March actually brings.  I am hoping for more lamb days! 🙂 Are you?

MARCH IS READING MONTH:  We really liked reading aloud The Little Mouse, The Red, Ripe Strawberry and the Big, Hungry Bear by Don Wood.  To save the strawberry from being eaten by the big, hungry bear, the mouse finally decides to share the strawberry.  The kinders were happy that I decided to share strawberries with them.  A tasty extra snack!  

It was so fun to see and read each other’s clothing when we came to school WEARING WORDS on Thursday.  I can’t believe I didn’t take any pictures.  I totally forgot in the midst of learning.  🙁


SHARED READING:  Each morning we spend some time reading a poem and book together. This week we read the poem The Chubby Snowman and the book Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you hear?  Together, we focus on popcorn words, rhyming words, patterns in sentences, fluency, punctuation and more.  At the end of the week, the kinders receive their own copy of the poem to keep in their book bins.  It is heartwarming to see them recite and read these poems to themselves and with their reading buddies.

WRITING:  We started a new type of writing called Informational Writing or “All About” writing.  We asked ourselves “Why we have All About books?” Answer: “To learn something new, to teach others and to enjoy!” Our topic of study was CHICKENS.  We read many different non-fiction books on chickens while writing down many interesting facts on a big chart. Then we organized these facts onto our own “have, can, are’ papers and highlighted 3 favorite facts before writing them down and sketching pictures in our  All About Chickens booklets.  The kinders did an AMZING job!!  Enjoy having your kinder read their writing to you.  We will continue informational writing throughout the month of March.

FAIRY TALE—THE LITTLE RED HEN:  Each week during March we will study a favorite fairy tale.  We began by learning what makes a story a fairy tale.  *A fairy tale usually begins with “once upon a time” and may have a happy ending.  *A fairy tale may have talking animals and a not so nice character.  *A fairy tale may take place in a forest and contain the number 3.  *A fairy tale may teach us a lesson.  We read The Little Red Hen this week. The kinders were introduced to a comprehension/retelling map called the Shape Go Map.  Each shape helps with recalling details of the story.  The kinders practiced their retelling skills by using character cutouts and a setting that they drew onto a paper bag.  I hope that you ask them to sing the retelling song we learned as they retell the story to you this weekend.

MATH:  This week the kinders practiced making partners of 10, drawing Tiny Tumblers on Math Mountains, solving addition problems and decomposing teen numbers by drawing 10 and extra ones.  They kinders are becoming such good mathematicians!

READING:  This week the kinders learned that when reading challenging books you need to use a new kind of picture power.  That means you really need to spend time looking at the pictures, noticing more and more details while making sure the words match the pictures. They also learned that snap words (popcorn words you can identify in a snap) can be disguised with endings of -ed, -ing, -s.  The kinders also worked on remembering what we read by retelling who was in the story, where it took place, what happened first, next last and how the characters were feeling. (Sounds like the Shape-Go-Map, right?  What a fun connection!) The kinders are developing this skill as their reading level grows.  

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION:  Birthday wishes were given to Amelia on Thursday.  Thank you so much for the fun “do it yourself” masks and crayons.

*OUTSIDE GEAR:  THANK YOU for sending and continue to send your kinder in boots or outside play shoes.  The snow has disappeared but the wood chips are very wet and dirty and the wind is very COLD.  Keep listening to the daily weather report for sending the correct clothes.

*TAKE HOME books:  Please help your kinder to remember to return their book baggie EACH Monday, Tuesday and Thursday so that they are consistent with their read aloud practice and are able to check out a new book each time to build their reading experiences.  Don’t forget to sign the parent sheet and include comments or observations you feel may be helpful.

*PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES:  Our Spring Conferences will be held Monday, March 11 & Wednesday, March 13 from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Conference time reminders were sent home  with your kinder. Please let me know if you will not be able to attend conferences or if you have a conflict so that we can reschedule. Report cards will be sent home Monday.  If possible, please take a moment to review it.  We will be looking at it together. Please arrive on time, as we have 15 minutes to discuss your wonderful kinder! I will  do my best to stay on schedule.  I can’t wait to share your kinder’s progress with you!! They are AMAZING!!!
