News of the Week–March 1-5

POPCORN WORDS:    HOME.  WENT.   ABOUT.       The popcorn words are becoming a bit harder to recognize so I can not stress it enough that practice at home is so crucial to your kinder’s growth.  We practice identifying our words many times and in many different ways throughout the day but your kinder needs to practice them at home too.  Thanks for taking on this important role. Your February flash cards were sent home this week.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS: We celebrated his birthday on Tuesday wearing Dr. Seuss attire. We learned that Theodore Seuss Giesel was Dr. Seuss’s official name and he wrote books under two names….Dr. Seuss and Theo. LeSeig. This is what we did:

  • Read Green Eggs and Ham, The Tooth Book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, In a People’s House
  • Read a couple newspapers that were filled with fun facts different genre of books.
  • Made a craft of Cat in the Hat
  • Solved addition and subtraction problems and wrote the equations using red and blue fish (based on One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish).

LITERACY/PHONICS: We did Dr. Seuss themed activities this week.  We worked on reading popcorn words, creating rhyming words and reading & writing -am real and nonsense words.  TIC TAC TOE, GREEN EGGS IN A ROW was so fun playing at school that you can play it at home with your board games and green eggs and ham.

MATH:  We completed dot to dot pictures, wrote numbers 1-20, solved addition and subtraction problems, drew “tiny tumblers” that are tumbling down each side of the mountains  and more.  We finished the week by learning more about cubes and other shapes.

READING:  We looked closely at non-fiction books. We started learning about how Avid Readers talk like an expert – they use fancy words. Using a book called Honey Bees, we found the fancy words pollen and nectar. We looked at non-fiction books and found WOW things and shared them with our reading partners. It was fun having reading playdates with our reading partners using non-fiction books. We spent time playing school and playing games with non-fiction books too! We finished the week with each table studying a topic of non-fiction books. It was fun learning all about certain topics!

WRITING:  We started a new type of writing— PERSUASIVE WRITING this week.  First we thought of problems we have at school and decided to write about walking in the hallway. Next we gave reasons why this is a problem and gave a solution to the problem.  At the end of the week we made a poster to persuade others to walk in the hallway at Georgetown.  Celebrate with your kinder as they show you their writing & sign this weekend.  This was hard work but everyone persevered.

KOOL KINDERS ARE BOOK LOVERS:

We have started another round of being the Kool Kinder.  This time the kinders will be taking home the SURPRISE BAG.  They will need to fill the bag with an object, write down 3 clues so that  their friends can guess what is inside.  So far the items have been a band-aid, stuffed animal named Dude and a Barbie doll.

SADDLE UP AND READ! is the school wide theme to celebrate March is Reading Month.  Each Friday will be various “dress up” days.  Please refer to our kindergarten March calendar that was sent home to see the themes listed.

Each kinder that brings back their TAKE HOME books on Wednesdays will be entered in the school-wide March reading month giveaways.  Kinders will not be participating in keeping track of reading minutes on a weekly calendar.  Lasso a good book and have fun reading at home!

We had fun decorating our classroom door with Gingerbread Cowboys after reading the book with the same title.  Our hallway board is decorated with some cute cows.

NEWS—-March 2-6

After seeing the snowflakes this morning, it is time to wish for spring weather.  Don’t you agree?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS: We celebrated his birthday on Monday by learning that Theodore Seuss Giesel was Dr. Seuss’s official name and he wrote books under two names….Dr. Seuss and Theo. LeSeig. We read so many of his stories like Green Eggs and Ham, The Tooth Book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, In a People’s House. We read a newspaper that was filled with fun facts different genre of books. We also had fun using Dr. Seuss themed props (courtesy of Mrs. Stutz) during fun photo shoots.

MATH:  We started the week by doing two Dr. Seuss related math activities…..adding red and blue fish together (based on One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish) and then writing the total AND identifying numbers 1-20 while placing that many objects on ten frames. Oh the fun we had! We completed dot to dot pictures, wrote teen numbers,

WRITING:  This week, we while writing persuasive letters to incoming kindergarteners we focused on spelling strategies.  Using these strategies gives us word power!  Some of the strategies we used were looking at our word wall, stretching out the word and writing the sounds we hear, looking for little words that may be hidden in larger words and not forgetting about the vowel. We wrote about the problem of kids playing too rough on the playground. We wrote a greeting, reasons why this is a problem, a solution to the problem.  We also read a mentor text Do Not Bring your Dragon to Recess. We ended our writing by signing a petition saying we will play safe on the playground. The kinders did AMAZING!

READER’S WORKSHOP:  The kinders practiced reading non-fiction texts and talking like an expert about the books we read. They read books as groups and found things they thought were WOW about the books or moments when we want to ask questions, to learn more! We also learned nonfiction text often has fancy words that we may want to learn more about. The kinders also practiced having reading playdates by  sounding like teachers and playing school while reading non-fiction books!

MARCH IS READING MONTH:  We read The Sleepy Little Alphabet and listened to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom while eating alphabet pretzels.  The kinders really had fun reading with their flashlights. Sorry about the dark pictures…the lights needed to be off, you know!! 🙂  Thank you for supplying one for your kinder.

MYSTERY READER:  Skyler was excited to see her dad be the mystery reader Wednesday afternoon.  He read Dragons love Tacos because he likes to eat tacos.

KOOL KINDERS ARE BOOK LOVERS:

Reagan likes to read Berstain Bears In the Dark.

Emmie brought Tiny the California Easter Bunny.

Be on the lookout for THE SURPRISE BOX.  The kinders are excited to take this box home and fill it with an item and write 3 clues about that object.  The kinder gives the clues to their friends and they need to try to guess what is inside the box.  So far we have had a sleep mask and a koala bear.

NEWS OF THE WEEK—-Feb 25-March 1

 imgres-1                    imgres-2

Welcome to March and the anticipation of spring.  We learned this week that the weather during March can be like a lion (wintery, cold) or a lamb (spring-like,warm breeze). We are not sure when the ‘lambs’ will arrive but we all think that they should come soon to Georgetown.  🙂

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS:  We had fun on Friday with rhymes that made sense and some that were just silly.  We learned that Theodore Seuss Giesel was Dr. Seuss’s official name and he wrote books under two names….Dr. Seuss and Theo. LeSeig. We read so many of his stories like Green Eggs and Ham, The Tooth Book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, The ABC’s book and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. We learned that his birthday is on March 2. We read a newspaper that was filled with fun facts about Dr. Seuss and the books that he wrote.

We had fun practicing reading our popcorn words by playing TIC TAC TOE, GREEN EGGS IN A ROW!  Enjoy playing at home with your board games and green eggs and ham. The kinders practiced their rhyming skills by playing games like, GREEN EGGS AND HAM ANYONE?….flipping eggs to make real or not real (silly) rhyming words. It was also fun to make and record rhyming words inside our Cat in the Hat books. We practiced telling addition & subtraction problems using fish crackers based on One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish Making a Cat in the Hat craft finished our day of learning. Maybe you can celebrate at home by reading your favorite Dr. Seuss book.  Oh, what a great day it was!!

MATH: The kinders observed the differences between 2D shapes (circles, triangles, etc) and 3D shapes (cone, sphere, cube).  We learned that 2D shapes are flat but 3D shapes take up space.

They were introduced to Tiny Tumblers who live on Math Mountains.  The Tiny Tumblers practice their tumbling all day long.  Some Math Mountains have a lot of Tiny Tumblers on one side of the mountain and not so many on the other side, but when you count all of the Tiny Tumblers they equal the Math Mountain number. These math mountains will help the kinders learn and practice number partners. For example, on math mountain 6 there are 4 tiny tumblers living on one side and 2 tiny tumblers living on the other side.  (4+2=6)   We also compared numbers to decide which number is greater or less and explored partners of 10.

WRITING: The kinders wrote small moment stories about going to bed and lunch time at school after we told the steps over our fingers. Choices was the perfect topic for the kinders’ “On Demand” writing piece because they are experts about what happens during this time each day. This is when they needed to do their own writing without help from their teacher. They practiced telling their small moment story across their fingers, sketching their pictures, adding labels to their pictures, adding words (and stretching out the sounds all on their own), using capital letters and sentence stoppers (punctuation). Wow…that is a lot of work!! They worked so hard!!  I am so impressed and proud of their writing.  All of their small moment stories will be coming home next week for you to enjoy.

READING:  We used a book this week called Can you see our eggs? to help us learn that readers notice blends, like “gr” in “ground” or “fl” in “flower” to solve unknown words. It also helped us to practice reading all the way to end of a word to figure it out and to look for familiar popcorn words before reading. It is so exciting to see the kinders making a connection to these reading skills when we are reading or writing together. Our quiet reading time is up to 12-14 minutes. Yippee!!

MYSTERY READERS: We had 3 of them this week!  Wednesday, Breslyn’s dad had time off from teaching his 5th graders and he read us Memoirs of a Goldfish.  A lovely, cute story about friendship.

Thursday, I had a surprise visit from my oldest daughter, Hannah, Madeline and baby Abigail. (She goes back to teaching herself in a week or so) Hannah read Goodnight, Mr. Panda because getting ready for bedtime is a fun part of their day.  The kinders were excited and so kind to Madeline and Abigail.

Friday, Lily’s mom read Step This Way by Dr. Seuss. We learned about how different animals use their feet. A perfect book for our Dr Seuss celebration day.

POPCORN WORDS:  AND    GET  Our popcorn words were fun this week because we could make so many rhyming words from them.  The popcorn words are becoming a bit harder to recognize so I can not stress it enough that practice at home is so crucial to your child’s growth.  We practice identifying our words many times and in many different ways throughout the day but your child needs to practice them at home too.  Thanks for taking on this important role.

Dr. Seuss Day!

Since Dr. Seuss’ birthday is on March 2, we will be celebrating with a Dr. Seuss-themed learning celebration on Friday, March 1!

We will be having a lot of fun by reading and learning about all things Dr. Seuss! If your kinder would like to dress up in Dr. Seuss style (Think about characters from books like Cat in the Hat, Fox in Sox, Green Eggs & Ham, Grinch, Horton Hears a Who, etc.)  OR in red, black and white, that would be fabulous!!

I can’t wait to see what Seuss-tastic outfits we’ll have on Friday for our celebration!
