NEWS—Nov. 11-15

It is hard to believe that it is mid-November and we are looking forward to Thanksgiving.  We had some fun making some silly looking turkeys to decorate our classroom. They will come home soon.

POPCORN WORDS    OR    FOR

READING: We continued learning about our Super Reader Powers! We practiced reading using our POINTER POWER, our REREAD POWER, our PARTNER POWER (which we practiced by reading The Itsy Bitsy Spider), our PICTURE POWER and our SNAP WORD POWER! Wow…we have a lot of reading powers! We loved looking for SNAP words (popcorn words) in their books and writing them down! I’m so proud of how hard they are working!

HANDWRITING: We practiced writing the TAIL FAMILY letters (j,g,q,p,y)  We will review all of the lower case letters next week and begin practicing the proper formation of the upper case letters after Thanksgiving.  Keep working at home….it is helpful!

MATH: The kinders practiced identifying their shapes and learned about new shape…a hexagon. The Kinders had to find certain shapes and color them the correct color.  We also helped Puzzled Penguin write his numbers in the correct order. Good thing we helped him, he gets puzzled sometimes.  On Friday, the kinders worked in their own office space to take their Unit #2 math test.  I am excited to grade them and share their progress with you..

WANTS AND NEEDS:   We read Berenstain’s Bears get the Gimmies to help us learn the difference between wants and needs.  Wants are things that we wish we had.(doll, baseball, Xbox games, ipad)  Needs are things that we need to have.(food, water, clothes, shelter) Then we sorted pictures of wants and needs.  We sorted pictures of things we want and need. We completed a few worksheets to help us in our learning…a coloring paper and a cut and paste activity.

SPLIT LIT:   This week we started our new Split Lit. center activities.  After getting a chance to assess and re-assess the kinders, I was able to create a group of activities that enables them to work on the skills they need to practice the most.  The kinders spend this time with working in small groups either with Mrs.Bynum, myself or working independently on literacy activities such as identifying and writing letters, reading emerging books, rhyming words, beginning sounds and more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS:

We celebrated Kylie’s birthday on Tuesday.

We celebrated Katelyn’s birthday (a day earlier) on Friday.  Happy Birthday girls!

MYSTERY READERS:  There are many dates available for you, a grandparent or an older sibling to be a mystery reader.  If one of the dates listed do not work for your schedule, please contact me and we can make other arrangements.  Here is the link to sign up.
